In American Truck Simulator, states serve as the subdivision of the job market (whereas Europe is divided into countries), although not all states are accessible at this moment. There are currently 50 states that encompass the United States, these are bound together in a union with each other.

If players wish to expand their access to other countries, they must pay a fee (ranging from €30,000 to €52,000), and they can only expand to countries connected to those they already have access.

SCS have stated that most future map expansions, if not all, will be at additional cost. At launch, the game started off with the U.S. states of California and Nevada. Arizona was released in June 2016 as a free update to all players. A number of other states have now been added as paid downloadable content.
